Every good superhero has to contend with an evil nemesis and a vegan superhero inevitably has many. But is Katie one of them? Hmm, she’s not that powerful. And she’s not evil. Truth be told, she’s more of an irritant than a nemesis. Yes, Katie is Venus’s Arch-Irritant.
She used to be Venus’s friend. Sort of. They were on the swim team together but there was always tension between them. Maybe it was because Venus was captain and Katie needed to be in charge. Who can say? Regardless, they didn’t trust each other.
Katie is a hard-working rule-follower who always does as she’s told by grown-ups, whether they be parents, teachers or government representatives. It’s not her fault really. Like so many, she’s been unable to break free of their conditioning and believes, without question, everything they tell her.
Perhaps that’s where the tension comes from. Venus doesn’t follow without question. Lawful or not, Venus has to be certain that what she’s doing is morally right. Katie doesn’t think much about morality. She assumes that if it were immoral, it would be against the rules, so she doesn’t need to think about it. Katie thinks about being top of the class. Katie thinks about attending an elite university. Katie thinks about competing in the Olympics. Katie wants to be a shining example of what a young person can achieve if they play by the rules. And she makes sure everyone knows what a beacon she is; going out of her way to give guidance to others when she feels they need it; and reporting any wrong-doing to the appropriate authorities. For the offender’s own good, of course.
